I’ve been married to my best friend since I was 23. Crazy to think it’s been 17 years this April {2015}! We have two boys. Our eldest is our only biological child, but through the grace and miracle of adoption he is not an only child like myself. (Not that being an only child was all that bad, but I always wanted a larger family.)
Early on in our parenting, we made the decision to homeschool. I’m currently in my 10th year of homeschooling. Although it’s often hard…very hard…I know I am blessed to be able to stay home every day with my boys, teaching them, knowing them, loving them.
When my firstborn was still a baby, I decided to take up crochet. I enjoyed having a hobby that kept my hands busy and allowed me to use color and texture to create something beautiful, yet functional. Baby blankets and afghans were my crochet project of choice.
Then a few years later I found I had knit envy. I didn’t like the look of crochet for the clothing items I wanted to make. Socks. Mittens. Gloves. Sweaters. I just really preferred the look of knitted clothes over crocheted. If I wanted to be able to make the things I wanted, I needed to know how to knit. So that Christmas I asked my husband and son for the teach-yourself-to-knit kit that I had seen at our local craft supply store. Of course, they bought it for me. And once I learned the basics of knit and purl, I just kept on knitting! Whenever I’d find a pattern I wanted to make with a new-to-me technique, I’d get online and search for it– most of what I’ve learned has been by watching online knitting videos.
I enjoy the challenge of larger projects such as sweaters, but I love sock knitting and making mittens and/or fingerless mitts. I love searching for patterns on Ravelry. And I rarely use the same pattern twice (except for the ones I’ve designed).
Over the years, I came to realize that knitting is more than just a hobby for me.
It’s my passion.
And I want to master it.
